Name:[/u] Rupert Giles
Nicknames:[/u] Giles, G-Man (to be used only at risk of your own limbs), Ripper (again, this is not a name to use if you want to be in his good graces)
Age:[/u] 50
Biography:[/u] Rupert Giles was raised by a Watcher family. He did not discover his fate until he was ten years old, crushing his dreams of being either a fighter pilot or a grocer. He began studying to be a Watcher himself, following in the footsteps of his father and grandmother. He was accepted to Oxford Univerity, but dropped out when he was twenty-one. He went to London, where he revelled in rebellious magicks. Eventually, his dabbling resulted in the death of one of his friends. His newfound world of pleasure and fun shattered, he returned to his studies and his duty as a Watcher.
In his studies, he has become proficient at a wide variety of skills, including various forms of combat. He is most skilled as a fencer. Giles is also capable of speaking or reading a number of languages, with varying levels of fluency.
Though he has had other jobs, notably as a curator for a British museum ("maybe the British Museum" as Willow put it) his calling is as a Watcher. By the time he met Buffy Summers, all reticence towards his calling seemed to have vanished. He was able to push her to accept her status as Slayer, partially due to his own experiences with rebellion. Throughout his time as Buffy's Watcher (both officially and otherwise) he has displayed that as much as he expects of her, he holds himself to at least as high a standard. He has shown himself willing to sacrifice his home, love, and life for others.
Personality:[/u] Giles' childhood desire to either become a "fighter pilot, or possibly a grocer" is reflective of the duality of his nature. He has a strong desire for a normal life. He can be kind, gentle, and quite shy. He stutters when embarrassed. He loves the smell of books. Occasionally, he likes dressing up in silly costumes. He "cries at every funeral." He is also capable of great cruelty. He is willing to take a human's life with his own hands, when he feels it is for the greater good. He is not afraid to tell the truth, even when others don't want to hear it. In his past, he has been incredibly rebellious, delving into dark magicks and petty theft. Though he is often viewed as a bastion of tradition now, to the point of being "kind of a fuddy-duddy", he will still rebel for the right causes.
Overall, Giles tries to do right by the world, sacrificing whatever he deems necessary.
